Diablo Cody Reflects on Barbie Film Experience :- In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody opened up about her thoughts on the recent Oscar nominations for the Barbie film, a project she had initially worked on but didn’t come to fruition. The Greta Gerwig-directed and co-written Barbie movie earned eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, but fans expressed disappointment over Gerwig’s absence in the Best Director category and Margot Robbie’s exclusion from the Best Actress race.

Cody, who won the Best Original Screenplay Academy Award in 2008 for “Juno,” expressed her perspective on the Barbie film’s success and the controversies surrounding the nominations. Despite acknowledging that Gerwig and Robbie deserved recognition, Cody emphasized the monumental achievement of the film, which grossed over $1.4 billion worldwide.

Here’s what I’m going to say. Obviously, of course, I think Greta deserved a nomination and so did Margot,” Cody stated. “But they made a billion dollars on that movie, okay? I would trade my Oscar for a billion-dollar movie right now, if I could flip a switch! Sorry if that’s disrespectful to the Academy.

Gerwig, recognized in the Best Adapted Screenplay category, and Robbie, a nominee in the Best Picture field as one of the producers, contributed to the film’s immense success. Cody acknowledged the challenges of working on a Barbie project, expressing her respect for what Gerwig and her team achieved.

“I’m telling you, that was a tough project,” said Cody, whose next film is the teen horror-romance “Lisa Frankenstein.” “Having worked on [a Barbie project] made me respect it all the more because that is a very challenging property to take and turn into something real. And they did it.”

Cody acknowledged the snubs but emphasized that the film’s overall success may overshadow individual nominations. “So you could call it a snub, but I think that what they achieved is probably bigger than those individual nominations,” she added.

Reflecting on her own experience with the Barbie project, Cody revealed in a previous interview with GQ that the studio wanted a “girl-boss feminist twist on Barbie,” a task she found challenging given Barbie’s iconic image. Despite her past struggles, Cody highlighted the transformative nature of the Barbie film and recognized the achievements of Gerwig and Robbie in bringing the project to life.

While Cody’s Oscar win 16 years ago marked a turning point in her career, she acknowledged the transient nature of success in the entertainment industry. “But I always say in this business, people are always onto the next,” she explained. “So you get to be the prom queen for the year, and then it’s like, ‘Alright, what else you got?’ You can’t coast on it forever, unfortunately.”

As the Barbie film continues to make waves in the industry, the debate over Oscar nominations remains a hot topic, with Cody offering a unique perspective on the intersection of commercial success and critical recognition in Hollywood.
