In a health update from Buckingham Palace, it has been revealed that King Charles is doing well after undergoing treatment for an enlarged prostate. The 75-year-old monarch was admitted to the London Clinic private hospital on Friday morning and is expected to spend at least one night for observation.
The procedure, described as a “corrective procedure,” was carried out in the same hospital where his daughter-in-law, Catherine, the Princess of Wales, underwent abdominal surgery last week. Queen Camilla, who arrived with the King, has already left the hospital in central London.
King Charles made his health condition public to encourage other men to prioritize their health and get their prostates checked. The announcement led to a surge in searches about enlarged prostates on the NHS website, a development welcomed by healthcare professionals and charities.
A spokesperson for Buckingham Palace stated that the King is “delighted to learn that his diagnosis is having a positive impact on public health awareness” and expressed gratitude for the well-wishes received.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak sent best wishes to the King for a speedy recovery. However, it was emphasized that the medical treatment would not result in any constitutional changes for the King’s role as the head of state, and there would be no need for “counsellors of state” to stand in during his recovery.
Enlarged prostates, which are non-cancerous, are common among older men, with about one in three men over the age of 50 experiencing some symptoms. The medical treatment for this condition is not expected to significantly impact the King’s official duties.
